Witnesses said Algazali asked Durand to delete the tweet when she saw it. Durand told her to make him delete it. According to the witnesses that’s when the fight broke out in the hallway. Algazali said Durand punched her in the chest during the attack.

Durand was questioned by campus public safety, but it’s unclear if he will be charged for the attack.

People online have condemned Durand for threatening to smash Algazali’s laptop because it had a Donald Trump sticker on it. Trump supporters came out in force to support Algazali after the online threats and physical attack.

Several reviews have been left on the St. John’s Facebook page, calling for Durand to be punished.

“A young lady today was threatened and harassed by black lives matter activists on your campus, as well as on twitter for her political views. I believe this is highly unacceptable, disturbing, and hopefully not encouraged or enabled by St. Johns University. Appropriate action must be taken to protect the rights and safety of this young woman. I give a one star because so far, I am unaware of any action being taken by St. Johns. Unacceptable.” –Shaun Shook

“Totally disgusting how they allow their female students to be treated. If you have a daughter, or are just a decent individual, do not send your children here. Nor should you consider attending this school given that it allows male students to harass and physically assault its female students. Very dangerous school for any student. The administration gives no guarantees that your child will not be assaulted here.” –Christopher Espinoza

“We’re supposed to have freedom of speech in this country. That being said, today a male student assaulted a young woman (student) just because she had a Donald Trump sticker on her laptop and SJU let him walk without any repercussion. He and his friends then celebrated the whole event on social media. Would not recommend any parent sending their child to this school.” –Joseph George

“If Clifford Durand doesn’t get expelled, it only proves that because of color of skin, some can get away with more than others. If a white kid made threats to any similarity of this, there’d be nation wide media coverage, a federal investigation, expulsion and probably legal ramifications.” –Mike Ramis

“I’ve been hearing about a student who was threatened with violence for having a political sticker on their laptop. The student who made the threat on Twitter, Clifford Durand, has not been reprimanded by school officials. It’s VERY clear that this school does not care about or respect the safety of its students. I was going to apply for this college next year, but I’m not into being threatened for my political beliefs. Maybe you should try actually working to make a physically safe environment for your students, instead of making an emotionally safe environment.” –Jon Saline
